Wheat allergy is an allergic reaction to one or more proteins found in wheat. When a person with a wheat allergy eats foods containing wheat, their immune system mistakenly identifies the proteins as harmful and triggers an allergic response. Symptoms can range from mild reactions, such as hives or stomach discomfort, to severe reactions, including anaphylaxis.
In some individuals, exposure to airborne wheat flour or grain dust can also trigger an allergic reaction. For example, repeated inhalation of wheat flour in occupational settings, such as bakeries, can lead to a condition known as baker's asthma.
Wheat allergy is one of the more common food allergies in children. Many children outgrow the allergy during childhood, although some continue to have it into adulthood.
The primary treatment for wheat allergy is strict avoidance of wheat and wheat-containing ingredients. Because proteins similar to those found in wheat may also be present in related wheat species, individuals with a wheat allergy may need to avoid ingredients such as:
- Durum wheat
- Spelt
- Kamut® (khorasan wheat)
- Emmer
- Einkorn
- Farro
- Semolina
- Bulgur
Anyone with a diagnosed wheat allergy should work closely with their allergist or healthcare provider to determine which foods and ingredients need to be avoided based on their individual allergy profile.
A wheat allergy requires avoiding wheat and wheat-derived ingredients. In contrast, people with celiac disease must avoid all sources of gluten, including wheat, rye, barley, and ingredients made from these grains.
While both conditions require careful attention to food choices and ingredient labels, celiac disease involves a lifelong immune reaction to gluten, making strict avoidance of all gluten-containing grains essential.
