Monitoring is recommended to prevent deficiencies or complications from developing and to check that the gluten-free diet is being adhered to (indication of how well a coeliac sufferer has incorporated the diet plan into his/her life). As a rule, follow-up examinations are recommended three months and one year after diagnosis. The following annual examinations are then recommended throughout the patient's life:
- Clinical examinations: weight, height, BMI, whether the patient has reached puberty (if the patient is a child), general sense of well-being
- Laboratory: testing for endomysial IgA antibodies or tissue transglutaminase IGA, blood count and any further tests depending on the symptoms
- Dietary advice
Biopsy tests are recommended if the patient has not suffered any complications and if the patient is 3+ years old when diagnosed.
