Dermatitis Herpetiformis

Dermatitis Herpetiformis, also known as “Duhring illness”, is a chronic skin disease with symptoms such as itching and eczema. It is noticeable through red pustules and blisters, which appear on elbows, knees, buttocks, neck, throat, shoulders, as well as on the lower back. The rash is similar to a Herpes rash, however, it should not be mistaken for the virus. Diagnosing “Duhring illness” usually involves a skin biopsy, where a small piece of skin is examined under a microscope. Doctors may also perform blood tests to check for specific antibodies associated with coeliac disease. Similar to coeliac disease, Duhring's disease is managed by following a strict gluten-free diet. Avoiding foods with gluten can help reduce or eliminate skin rashes and other associated symptoms.
