Gluten free – Frequently asked questions

1. Am I at risk of nutritional deficiencies when I switch to gluten free?

No, not necessarily, but if you follow a balanced diet, you won't miss out on essential nutrients.

Balance is the key! It would be a good idea to have a blood test after a diagnosis such as coeliac disease so that any possible nutritional deficiencies can be discussed with the help of a professional dietician.

With some careful planning and our delicious recipes, your transition into the world of gluten free living will be made easier.

2. What happens if you eat gluten free when you don't have coeliac disease?

Nothing at all!
A gluten free diet, from time to time, does not harm your body and may be followed safely. You can also enjoy gluten free food with family and friends. This will give you the chance to try out new recipes.

3. Can I eat food containing gluten from time to time?

Definitely not! There are no exceptional circumstances when it comes to coeliac disease.

Even if your body takes some time to react to gluten and you feel normal to begin with, your immune system is still being adversely affected and your intestinal villi may become inflamed.

If you suffer from coeliac disease, you need to be informed about this auto-immune disease.

4. How long do I have to wait after my diagnosis before feeling better?

At last! You now know what's happening to you! You just need to be a little patient and persistent when switching to your new diet. Once you start eating gluten free products

  • your symptoms will disappear and
  • you'll definitely feel a lot better.

5. Do I need to have my own cookery utensils and kitchen equipment or a separate kitchen?

It's good to err on the side of caution, but it's not necessary to convert your home.

  • A separate toaster,
  • a separate bread basket and perhaps,
  • your own food cupboard in the kitchen will suffice.

You could even have

  • kitchen utensils specially labelled in your name (especially those made of wood), just for using with gluten free products.

It's important that

  • all work surfaces,especially wooden chopping boards, are thoroughly cleaned.

All this will soon become part of your routine and nothing will stand in the way of your gluten free cooking!

6. If I have coeliac disease, will my children have it?

This auto-immune condition is not necessarily inherited. However, it would be a good idea to have the recommended blood test.

  • If antibodies indicating coeliac disease are found, a biopsy of the small intestine may be necessary. Genetic testing is also recommended if there is any uncertainty. This cannot diagnose, but can eliminate any suspicion of coeliac disease.

7. Can I drink beer?

The sun is setting, the air is balmy and you fancy a beer. Is beer allowed?

Yes – as long as it is labelled gluten free. You'll even be spoilt for choice, as there are many gluten free beers on the market. Cheers to that!

8. What about chips?

Chips are much more than just fried potatoes! Even though potatoes are gluten free, you should take a close look at any additional ingredients on the packet. When frying, ensure that the following are used:

  • separate fryer,
  • separate oil
  • or fry gluten free foods first!

Keep an eye on what goes on in the chip shop!

9. Can I eat ketchup?

Ketchup and mayonnaise are part and parcel of some meals! However, ingredients containing gluten may be lurking in sauces. So always read the packet container carefully and inquire to be on the safe side.

10. Can I eat oats?

Oats can get your day off to a nutritious start and are an important ingredient in muesli.
They are rich in

  • important B vitamins,
  • zinc,
  • iron,
  • magnesium,
  • protein and
  • polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Since March 2016, oat products containing non-contaminated oats have been identified by the symbol of an ear of wheat with a line through it. This symbol is additionally labelled 'oats' so that consumers can see that the product is a licensed, gluten free product containing non-contaminated oats (German Coeliac Society).

However, before you eat your next bowl of muesli, we recommend you check with your doctor whether or not you can eat oats.
