The symptoms disappear
The symptoms disappear, the values determined through serological examinations and the mucous membrane of the small intestine return to normal. For those affected by coeliac disease with the typical symptoms the results of a gluten-free diet are immediately noticeable: in only a few days the appetite improves as does one’s general wellbeing, the diarrhoea disappears, the growth in children returns to normal. Even possible symptoms of deficiency such as reduced bone mineralisation or anaemia through iron deficiency gradually subside. A gluten-free diet, especially if started right after the diagnosis, reduces the risk of long term health problems. Autoimmune illnesses associated with coeliac disease can, however, not entirely be excluded. One of these is for example the Hashimoto thyroiditis which often appears in girls in puberty.
