People with coeliac disease can safely use cosmetics and personal care products, including make-up, skincare products, toothpaste, mouthwash and lip products. Gluten is only harmful when it is consumed in significant quantities, and the small amounts that may be unintentionally ingested from these products are generally not considered a risk.
If you have concerns about a specific product, you can check the ingredient list for ingredients derived from gluten-containing cereals, such as Triticum (wheat), Hordeum (barley) or Avena (oats). However, cosmetic products do not require specific gluten-free labelling, and the absence of a gluten-free claim does not necessarily mean the product is unsuitable for people with coeliac disease.
As with any product, if you have specific sensitivities or prefer to minimise exposure, you may choose products labelled as gluten free, particularly those used on or around the mouth, such as toothpaste or lipstick. However, there is generally no need for concern when using standard cosmetic and hygiene products.
