But the colder months have plenty going for them, too. Consider this your gluten-free guide to winter, with ideas for family activities, warm drinks and the perfect snacks to pair them up with.
get out there:
winter activities for the whole family
Winter changes the rules a little. Activities you wouldn’t dream of doing in July suddenly become the whole point of leaving the house.
So layer up, pack some gluten-free snacks and make the most of it.
1. go ice skating
Find a local ice rink, gather the family and see who can make it around without grabbing the barrier. If you’re lucky enough to live somewhere with natural frozen lakes or ponds, only skate where local authorities have officially declared the ice safe.
And afterwards? A steaming cup of hot chocolate is practically part of the dress code.
2. take a winter hike
Head to the countryside, mountains or coast and enjoy the crisp air without the summer heat. Check the weather and conditions before heading out, wear suitable footwear and pack enough water and food for the journey.
A few gluten-free snacks in your backpack can keep everyone going when the “Are we there yet?” phase begins.
3. bring winter indoors
Not every winter day is inviting you outside. Some are very clearly telling you to stay home.
Use those grey afternoons for crafts with the kids. Make paper snowflakes, winter cards and decorations, or put together your own puppet show or family theatre production.
The living room stage is yours.
4. have a gluten-free family bake-off
A little competition makes an afternoon in the kitchen much more interesting.
Choose a gluten-free cake, pudding, bread or cookie recipe and challenge everyone to make their own version. You can judge presentation, taste and creativity.
Or declare everyone a winner and eat everything. A robust judging system.
5. make your own movie marathon
Some winter activities require absolutely no thermal layers.
Pick a theme, choose a few films and turn the living room into your own cinema. Add blankets, hot drinks and plenty of gluten-free snacks.
6. bake bread together
Few things can compete with the smell of freshly baked bread on a cold day.
Try making your own gluten-free loaf together and turn the kitchen into a mini bakery. Experiment with different shapes, toppings or flavours, then enjoy the results while they’re still warm.
