Birthday parties should be easy-breezy celebrations… but if you’re parenting a coeliac child, they can feel like an obstacle course made entirely of crumbs.
Good news: you don’t need magic, just the right hat for the job.
Every gluten-free parent switches between two roles: Host Hat & Guest Hat. Here’s how to master each of them, without losing the fun.

When the party is at your place and everyone’s counting on you.
Hosting gives you the most control, and the most opportunities to make things easy for everyone. You have two ways to play this:
Option A: the mixed menu (gluten-free + regular foods)
Totally doable, as long as cross-contamination is kept on a tight leash. Here's your to-do list:
- Ask parents of coeliac kids what their child loves
- Create a clearly marked GF zone
- Label everything GF with cute tags
- Watch the table like a friendly hawk
- If party favours include edible treats, make sure GF versions are available too.
Option B: the all-gluten-free menu (the stress-free hat trick)
This is the easiest, safest, happiest solution. It looks impressive (“Wow, everything is gluten-free?!”) but is secretly the least stressful for you.
No separating dishes.
No panicked “Wait, was that the gluten spoon?” moments.
No crumbs jumping from plate to plate like parkour athletes.
And the best part? Most parents won’t even notice the menu is GF. They’ll just notice that everything tastes great and no one is crying.
Tell your coeliac kids ahead of time, though. Watching their shoulders drop when they realise, they can eat anything is priceless.
