My name is Martha, and during my 2 day trip to Bologna I’ve managed to visit some gluten free eateries and will be sharing them with you here!

Like any other Italian city or village, the coffee in Bologna is superb.

TIP: Always start your day with a good coffee and play the rest of the day by ear!

During this trip we’ve booked a bed and breakfast accommodation. We’ve notified the hotel about my food intolerances and surely enough the next morning I was served with gluten free options, most of which are Schar’s products in mini packages. It turned out that the hotel we stayed in offered this everyday to every guest as part of its breakfast buffet. Apart from making it easy, it’s also more inclusive and appreciated.

PAN8

Our hotel was a few steps away from PAN8, where we had our first lunch. Basically this small, yet very popular, shop is actually a sandwich shop. The menu options are essentially all different toppings (cured meats and cheeses) to choose along regular or gluten free bread. In fact, all of the options are gluten free, you just have to specify that you require gluten free bread… and voilá! I got myself a classic bolognese sandwich with pistacchio di pesto, mortadella artigianale and burratina. Simply heaven on earth!

Ristorante La Capriata

Whilst you’re in Bologna, you obviously cannot miss out on their most authentic food - tagliatelle with bolognese sauce and tortellini (served in various ways and with various sauces). At RISTORANTE LA CAPRIATA, they are very dedicated to gluten free food and the whole menu can actually be adapted to be gluten free. Without a doubt, the thing that attracted me the most was the working bench at the entrance of the restaurant, where you can see before you Italian chefs preparing gluten free pasta dough into lasagna sheets, tagliatelle and various sizes of tortellini! Once there we’ve ordered almost all of the the tortellini options and I still cannot say which one’s my favourite! I loved them all. The most traditional one however is the simplest, with plain white cream. If you’re travelling for just one day - this has to be the only place to have your lunch or dinner.

Regina Sofia

Another must whilst in Italy is always Pizza. We’ve visited REGINA SOFIA where they serve great gluten free pizza. My obvious choice was the bolognese pizza with mortadella. Simply loved it.

Well that’s how my 2 day trip to Bologna looked like in terms of food. I hope this article serves as a good guide to you.
