Are you born a celiac or do you become one?
Yes and no. It is true that people with celiac disease are genetically predisposed to developing the condition. In fact, family members of people with celiac disease are ten times more likely to develop the disease than the general population. However, not everyone who carries the genes develops celiac disease.
The HLA-DQ2 and/or DQ8 genotypes are present in the vast majority of people with celiac disease. This is why genetic testing is often included in the diagnostic process. The reason that some people carrying the gene develop celiac disease while others do not remains unknown. Onset of celiac disease can occur at any age.
